The Shepherd of the North
Saint Cuthbert (c. 634–687) remains one of the most beloved and influential figures in English history. Often referred to as the "Wonder-worker of Britain," Cuthbert’s legacy is defined by a rare balance of solitary devotion and tireless service. Starting as a humble shepherd, he rose to become the Prior of Melrose and eventually the Bishop of Lindisfarne. Despite his high status, he was known for traveling on foot and horseback through the most remote corners of Northumbria, bringing comfort and spiritual guidance to those often forgotten by the world.
A Sacred Connection to Nature
What makes Cuthbert particularly resonate with artists and nature-lovers today is his deep, legendary connection to the natural world. He was an early advocate for what we might now call wildlife conservation. Stories tell of him standing waist-deep in the freezing North Sea to pray, only to have a pair of otters emerge from the waves to warm his feet with their fur—a moment beautifully captured in this relief print. He even established some of the earliest bird protection laws on the Farne Islands to protect the Eider ducks, which are still known locally as "Cuddy’s Ducks."
About the Materials
The Paper: Arnhem 1618 is a premium printmaking paper from the Netherlands. It offers a soft, velvety surface that absorbs ink deeply while maintaining crisp detail. Its archival quality ensures that this print will not yellow or degrade over time.
The Ink: We use a high-pigment "Rich Black" ink that creates a striking contrast against the paper. The matte finish provides a timeless, traditional look that avoids the glare of digital prints.
The Process: Each piece is hand-pulled, meaning there are slight, unique variations in the ink density of every print—making your specific piece a one-of-a-kind work of art.
Shipping & Framing Tips
Framing: The 8x16 inch "panoramic" format looks exceptional in a float frame, which allows the beautiful edges of the Arnhem paper to remain visible.
Packaging: Shipped flat in a reinforced mailer (or rolled in a heavy-duty tube) to ensure it arrives in pristine condition.
